My Story…
Why I Run
Have you ever been sad?
Lonely?
Depressed?
We've all been there at one point or another. But imagine if that was how you felt every day? Imagine if that's how someone you love feels?
Imagine if you felt these things so powerfully that suicide felt like the only way out?
That's why I run for Cape Samaritans. Because I know that there are people desperately clinging on, overwhelmed, looking for a way out.
Samaritans gives them a way out.
Samaritans shows them a path that isn't suicide.
This cause isn't about me, and I'm grateful to have lived a life free from these thoughts. But I have been touched by suicide. A few years after graduating high school, one of my lax teammates took his own life... on the day he was set to graduate from college.
It floored me. He was a happy guy. He had every possible advantage you could ask for -- loving parents, lots of friends, financial security, endless opportunities. How could he be suicidal?
His memory has stuck with me all these years later, but I never knew what to do with it. Then my Dad volunteered for the board of Cape Samaritans. When I asked him why he got involved, he lit up with joy telling me about the great work that the group does. How they both help prevent suicide, and help the families left behind to pick up the pieces.
I instantly knew I wanted to support him in the ways he selflessly supports this mission.
So I ask you to help me help Samaritans. They make a meaningful difference in the lives of people who need it. Their work matters.
Your donation will go to good use. It will help with initiatives like the 988 suicide hotline. It will help pay for staffers who can listen to people when they need it the most.

The Samaritans on Cape Cod and the Islands is a nonprofit organization that provides support to people experiencing crises. Our mission is suicide prevention: we are dedicated to helping people contemplating suicide or personally affected by suicide.
In 2020 (the most recent year for which data is available), there were 615 deaths by suicide in Massachusetts (a rate of 8.7 per 100,000) and Barnstable County had the third highest suicide rate in Massachusetts (14.4/100,000).
For those who may be struggling, grieving, or wanting to understand how to better support those in their lives, we have programs to help.
Crisis Lines are available 24/7 to anyone looking for support. There is no reason too great or too small to call – whatever the reason, we’re here to listen. The lines are free, anonymous and confidential. Reach us at 508-548-8900 or dial 988.
Community Education programs provide free materials for tabling events and host educational presentations and trainings to help community members learn about suicide prevention strategies.
Grief Services programs are available for those who have experienced the death of someone close to them by suicide. These resources help to provide loss survivors with various avenues for connection in ways and at times that are right for them.
Outreach Services programs provide direct support to specific at-risk populations. Currently, our Senior Outreach program is available to individuals who are 55 years or older, allowing an opportunity to receive weekly phone personal phone support from a matched volunteer.
