I'm running the Falmouth Road to END ALZ!
Before I was fortunate enough to "discover" ALZ.org, I spent many hours with the medical establishment trying (with limited success) to recall silly sequences of silly words --- and yet more hours trying to reproduce abstract stick drawings. After all of this mental prodding, the experts diagnosed me with “mild cognitive disorder”. (The word "dementia" was never used.) In fact, all of this testing really made me feel as though I was in a story:
I am on a boat with many other passengers. No one aboard is sure where we are or where we are going -- and no one seems to really care. We are being observed by stern-faced "experts" whose only concern seems to be that we all repeat five-word mantras: “woman, truck, yellow, garden, horse”.
What the experts never did was to suggest how I could proceed from their impersonal diagnosis to strategies for my daily life. There was nary a word, for instance, about how to remember to look at the lists they encouraged me to make as memory aids. The experts invited me to join a group of people who had (allegedly successfully) restyled their lives to accommodate the new reality of living with dementia. My problem with the group was that the members' discussions focused on personal life circumstances (family situations, interests, and activities) which were totally different from mine -- and no one explained how/what I could learn from them! (I quit that group.)
In contrast, once I began to interact with the staff and resources at ALZ.org, my life changed: Among the biggest changes have resulted from: (1) the educational opportunities, especially for my care partner Arny and (2) the telephone- and zoom-based counseling that are available for any matters that concern ME. Importantly, I was now given access to a variety of kinds of support group, to suit my needs.
Arny and I really need ALZ.org, and we hope that you will help us support their work! Our first personal effort to support ALZ.org involves raising funds for ALZ.org by joining Team END ALZ in the 2023 Falmouth Road Race. On August 20, Arny and I will be joined by our daughter Rachel, and we three will traverse the 7-mile Road Race course together, step by step!
I ask that you support my participation on Team END ALZ in the 2023 Falmouth Road Race by making a donation at https://bit.ly/SusanRosenbergRun2EndALZ
