For participating in 2023 WOKC-Run for the Kids

Description

Since Cindy Brinker Simmons founded Wipe Out Kids' Cancer (WOKC) in 1980, we've been working relentlessly for a day when cancer is no longer a threat to ANY child. WOKC recognizes the suffering associated with any childhood disease. Our focus is on winning the battle against the disease that claims the most lives of children… cancer! WOKC creates trusted partnerships, has a dedicated executive team and board, and funds novel research devoted to eradicating childhood cancer and to increasing survival rates. As importantly, WOKC provides hope and emotional support to the courageous children and families it serves.

Giving Hope to our Warrior Families

WOKC realizes cancer affects the entire family. Our unique WOKC program provides fun and free events throughout the year giving hope and support to our mighty Warriors and their families. All family members enjoy amusement venues, sporting events, holiday parties, and other social engagement activities…"medicine for the soul" as parents describe. The Warrior program also offers many opportunities for families to spend time with other families facing similar challenges.

Equipping Families with the necessities

Each year thousands of families receive the devastating news that their child has cancer. A Buddy Bag is a sturdy rolling suitcase given to pediatric cancer patients admitted for an overnight stay in a WOKC partnering hospital. Filled with carefully selected toiletries, electronics, comfort items, and entertainment activities, they are designed to ease the transition from home or pediatrician's office to the hospital. As part of WOKC's strategic plan, the Buddy Bag program has launched in other Texas cities and in the U.S.

Funding novel research for over four decades

WOKC funds novel pediatric cancer research projects nationwide. WOKC's Scientific Medical Research Committee carefully analyzes and selects innovative research studies that might not receive traditional funding but will advance treatments with fewer side effects and will help increase survival rates. To date, WOKC has funded over $8 million in promising novel research that has yielded over $22 million in additional grant money from the National Cancer Institute and other significant cancer-funding organizations. Since our humble beginnings, WOKC has funded a wide range of national cancer research projects in almost every pediatric cancer category as well as critical programs in support of cancer care for children.
