My Story…

On May 9th my friend and colleague, Eric received every parent's worst nightmare; news that his 5 year old daughter was hit by a truck and died. This little ray of sunshine with bouncy blonde curls and a heart filled with love and inclusion no longer walked this beautiful earth.
I still remember the feeling reading his email the morning of the 10th and my heart breaking for him, his wife, his baby boy and for Sidney. A beautiful soul gone from the world far, far too soon. The accident hit a core for me personally because Mike, my husband, was just recently home from a lengthy hospital stay after a firey car crash on April 23rd. Mike who turned 54 the day after his accident lived and Sidney died. It all seemed so unfair - why does one live and another not?
Months before the accidents Eric shared with me a book by Thich Nhat Hanh titled You are Here. It came as a part of a discussion several of us were having on living in the present moment or at least trying to. The author's message is clear. We are here to live. Live. Truly live all of it. Life is a gift. All of it.
What I have witnessed in the weeks and months since that time is the extraordinary strength and outpouring of love, compassion for others and giving from Eric and his family. They are exceptional humans. Truly exceptional and a beautiful example of what we need in our world. Their energy and inspiration comes from Sidney and everything she was in her beautiful short life. With this spirit I will run along side my oldest and youngest boys celebrating life, our lungs, our legs and community. Giving and receiving all in one.
