I’m typically content with the path of least resistance, whether buying the store-brand cookies for the school bake sale or chipping in a few dollars for a fundraiser as long as I can still sleep in on a Saturday morning.

But this is different. The Iraqi Children’s Foundation hits home for me. My deployment to Iraq in 2005 revealed the tragedy of war that is often acknowledged but rarely comprehended. This moment in my life was the catalyst to eventually joining the Coast Guard.

Many of us continue to carry the first-hand experiences of conflict or complicated rescues at sea. This race offers a chance to find peace with our past or help others with this personal discovery.
