Raise money for Rapahope

Parent Testimonial

"This is a week of thankfulness for me. John Stephens finished chemo last Sunday and finished radiation this Monday. His doctors arranged everything so that he could go to camp.
If I’m 100% truthful, I didn’t really think he would go to camp. For the past three years, we’ve been sort of stuck together. I knew that he needed to branch out, but I wasn’t sure he would. Seven days is a long time to be gone from home. But, he surprised me. The closer it got, the more excited he got.
Because of his radiation appointment, I got to see him on Monday. I was afraid he would have his suitcase with him and be ready to come home. Instead, he had a yellow bandana tied to his prosthetic leg because the cabin four guys are the yellow team. He had a plastic spoon tied to his leg because he retired as the champ when they played spoons. He had a red ribbon tied around his leg because that’s from the girl in the red cabin. I told him that I loved to play spoons and was quite good at it, and he told me it must be a different game. It had always sounded dumb when I described it to him. But, at camp, it’s really fun. He had only been gone 24 hours and there were already a million stories about Aiden from Louisiana, Counselor Justin who is not the same as Camper Justin, Julian, and so many others. One of his counselors brought him to the appointment, and they already had inside jokes. For the first time in a long time, he’s just one of the guys.
I have pored over the photos. I see John Stephens playing basketball in the lake, participating in stage activities, sitting with one friend, hanging out with a group of friends, making crafts, and generally smiling and relaxing. It breaks my heart that every child in that group photo has or had cancer, but I’m so thankful for Rapahope where they can all heal and play together."
