YCC - Youth Centres of Calgary

YCC - Youth Centres of Calgary is a grassroots, “home away from home", an oasis located in a low-income community where many of the children do not have access to safety, healthy role models and activities many other Calgary kids have every day after school. YCC’s kids aged 9-15 (typically 30-40 a day) spend a few wonderful hours of after school time doing what kids love to do after school - hanging out with friends, making new ones, learning and playing sports. They gain wisdom from 'cool' adult volunteers, have access to technology and homework help, music lessons, free sports equipment, games and art supplies. Kids are offered a secure and unlimited supply of food, and a healthy hot meal before they leave at 6:00pm, ready to take on the challenges of their lives. Recent years has been particularly difficult for many low income families and the children are increasingly affected by these troubling times in their homes and at school. Through this little centre, we address the multitude of problems associated with vulnerable youth growing up in Calgary’s most economically and socially challenged communities. We level the playing field for Calgary’s most vulnerable kids and offer them the opportunity to break the cycles of poverty in their own lives.
