My Story…
When I submitted my registration to run in the Pittsburgh Marathon 5K Race I knew exactly where I wanted my donation to go. Children's Hospital has always been a place where I choose to make donations, and for a big reason.
My sister Marissa was diagnosed with Leukemia when she was only five years old, and I was two. She fought hard for many months and unfortunately lost her battle the following June.
I am now thirty and I often wish I had someone to share all of my biggest life moments with such as my wedding day and future children. There is truly nothing more special than the bond between sisters.
My parents are the strongest people I know, and of course they still struggle to navigate my sister's loss. My hope is that this money can help other families by funding research for cures, treatments and family expenses.
This run is so much bigger than me finishing the race, it is about doing something that can help support others in such a difficult time in life and that is my only hope for collecting donations.

As part of Team Children's, my participation in the 2023 Pittsburgh Marathon supports UPMC Children's Hospital Foundation.
Funds support the patients and families served by UPMC Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh. Last year UPMC Children's Hospital had over 1 million patient visits and many of the programs, initiatives, and resources that make UPMC Children’s so special are funded by philanthropic gifts. Things like distraction therapy which provides patients something else to focus on during their medical procedures, the Child Life Department which provides many activities to create a sense of normalcy for hospitalized children, and the Free Care Fund which covers the cost of medical care for those that cannot afford it. These areas are not covered by insurance, yet are critically important to helping families face the many challenges that accompany a child’s treatment.
