My Story…
I am running to raise awareness and fundraise for the National Multiple Sclerosis Society. My cousin Jenna, who's 21 years old, was properly diagnosed about two years ago. She had no prior complications before her first lesion. Her symptoms progressed at an alarming rate, as she went from a young healthy girl to being completely paralyzed on the left side of her body almost overnight. It would take two months in the hospital recovering, then months of intense physical therapy to learn the basics, such as walking, all over again.
Being that there are different stages of the disease, multiple sclerosis varies significantly among patients. Currently, a cure for MS has not been developed, however many drugs help subdue daily symptoms and can delay the progression of this autoimmune disease. My hope for this donation is to enable extensive future research. While conducting my own studies, it seems the development of more accurate disease biomarkers are needed. Better clinical and imaging biomarkers will increase MS categorization per individual case, and allow for a better prognosis. These factors together will create the opportunity for timely personalized treatment, which is a great unmet need in MS clinical care.
Thank you for giving this a read :)
