My Story…
Learning Buddies Network (LBN) is proud to be a Silver-Level charity at the Run4Hope charity program of the BMO Vancouver Marathon.
I will be running 8 k virtually, in support of LBN's mission to provide free tutoring to elementary school students who need a helping hand.
Every $25 you donate will provide 1 hour of free tutoring and mentorship to elementary school-aged students.
LBN appreciates all donations. You will receive a tax receipt for a donation of $20 or more. If you donate $200 or more, you will receive a pair of free sunglasses from MarsQuest, They are running-friendly, comfortable, and have a retail value of $48.
ABOUT LBN:
Learning Buddies Network is a grass roots organization. We provide one on one free mentoring for little kids in elementary school who are struggling with reading or math. The idea of LBN came from my medical practice—I am referred kids who are not picking up the basics of primary grade skills and get discouraged early. Many are children without any true disability, but who need a boost, and whose families are not in a position to do that. They don’t need a lot of expensive stuff, just some serious encouragement and direction in their learning from an interested young adult. So that is what we do, and it works!
We are a small organization but we do great things. Our small staff trains and supervises over 550 individual volunteers, 80 of whom move up to leadership positions. These amazing young leaders. then mentor the new volunteers.
In the last year, we have provided 325 children each with 25 free mentoring sessions. Our Little Buddies represent over 50 schools in the Lower Mainland and beyond. In the coming year, we hope to reach 400 children. We have new opportunities through a grant from the Ronald S. Roadburg Foundation to provide programming for Indigenous kids throughout the province.
We count on the generosity of our supporters to be able to serve the needs of our many Little Buddies.
Here is a quote from a sponsor teacher at one of our schools:
“Your presence has benefited many children and parents in our community with security, increased confidence, and hope. Please trust that the work that you do here has a profound effect in making our future more caring, more aware, and more kind. My gratitude for LBN runs deep, and I look forward to continuing our connection into the next school year.”
Here are some Buddy quotes:
“I like learning new things with my mentor. Other kids should join learning buddies to make them smarter.”
“I didn’t like it before, but my mentor showed me that reading is awesome!”
