Our story…

Zoey’s Angels

2023 was a roller coaster to say the least. Early in the year, we found out that we were going to be a family of five. We were so excited and happy to welcome this little one into our lives. Avrie, our youngest, was going to be a big sister for the first time, and Ellie, was ecstatic to be the “biggest sister”.

Halfway through the year, our lives changed forever. Later in the pregnancy, we found out we were going to have another daughter, except it seemed there may be some health complications. Weeks later, after many specialist appointments, tests, and ultrasounds, we knew our daughter Zoey had a life limiting condition. We were devastated to say the least. We knew this baby, felt her kick, and loved her just like our other children.

This is when the Roger Neilson house stepped in. There was no judgement or criticism. Only compassion, empathy and support. Our nurse Lesley helped us so much, and we owe so much to her and the Roger Neilson house. They helped us navigate the healthcare system from the patient side (such a challenge!), they guided us through letting our daughters know their sister Zoey would be going to heaven one day, and they advocated on our behalf the entire time.

On October 3rd, 2023, our daughter was born an Angel. We had so hoped we could meet her in this world alive, but Zoey had other plans. Lesley and the Roger Neilson house were there to support us. They helped Zoey receive the dignity she deserved, and helped create memories we will never forget. Extended family came from across Canada, and we knew that Zoey was so loved. Friends sent their support, and our colleagues (truly friends) were there to drop everything to cover us.

When our daughter was buried, and her soul lifted to heaven, Lesley and Roger Neilson house were there for us and continued to support us. Lesley along with our counsellor Andrea, guided us and other couples with late pregnancy losses, stillborn, or newborn losses, through our grief in group sessions. These were invaluable to our grief journey.

Although this roller coaster seems to have had many downs, and very few ups, Zoey has truly brought so much to our lives. She has brought our family joy, sadness, shock, hope, heartbreak, grief and of course love. These emotions have been gifts, and ones that are so much more powerful and meaningful than words. Our family has learned to take each moment and cherish what we have. She has changed our hearts forever and helped us focus on what is most important.

Zoey has more ups planned for this ride, and we hope using this opportunity to raise money for the Roger Neilson House by telling our story will provide love and support for the future Angels joining Zoey’s team up in heaven. Their families deserve every opportunity to experience the most challenging time of their lives with Roger Neilson House in their corner. Please consider donating to this most important cause, and support others who will go through this in the future.

Love,

Joe, Elise, Ellie, Avrie and Zoey
