Help Dayon raise money

On July 26, 2023, something touched my soul.  Walking through the halls of the UPMC Hillman Cancer Center, I had the opportunity to speak with patients and their families who were receiving cancer treatments. Those conversations and interactions triggered a sense of urgency within me.  I realized that I needed to do more. Not just for the patients I met that day, but all patients suffering from this debilitating disease. 

I have felt first-hand what effect cancer can have on a family. In 2019, my uncle Larry was diagnosed with leukemia. Even though he fought like a champion, his health continued to decline, which took a toll on my entire family. Because of his declining health, he was unable to attend the game he taught me to love. But he always called with words of encouragement after every game. I miss those calls dearly as Larry Segers lost his battle on January 7, 2020.  Uncle Larry was a father-figure to me. Even though he had two sons, he took me under his wing and included me in all their activities. He was my mentor and taught me all about the X’s and O’s of the game, but more importantly he taught me about the importance of education and giving back to those in need. Uncle Larry is the reason I played football and is the main reason I play for the University of Pittsburgh.

In honor of his courageous battle as well as those warriors under siege from this horrible disease, I am announcing the “Tackle Cancer” campaign.  

For every tackle made by the Pitt Defensive team this season I am asking you to pledge a designated dollar amount or a flat donation to Rush to Crush Cancer.  Your donation will help to advance cancer research being done at UPMC Hillman Cancer Center. With your pledges, you are creating a positive impact on thousands of families across the country.  

As a team, we will fight on the field to give those fighting off the field, a chance to live their lives cancer free.
