My Story
Our son, Will, had a rocky start to life. In June 2022, at just 7 days old, he was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia (AML). At 3 weeks old, he began chemotherapy treatment. He spent the first 7 months of his life as an in-patient at SickKids. Through it all, he was unflappable. He was a happy, easy baby and quickly earned himself the nickname “Chill Will”.
Campfire Circle has been a part of Will’s life since birth. Volunteers at the hospital would watch and play with him so we could take breaks outside of the hospital room. Only a few weeks after his final discharge, we were all able to participate in a weekend at Campfire Circle Muskoka. He still had a central line and many medications to manage at the time but we felt completely comfortable with the amazing nursing team at Campfire Circle.
We then spent 5 wonderful days at family camp in the summer of 2023 and plan on returning again this summer.
Will is a little less “chill” these days - he is a busy, curious and delightful toddler - and we cannot wait to see him rip roaring around camp this summer. Campfire Circle is an incredibly special place - it really is the best silver lining to the hand that we were dealt. We are so excited to be able to support them again this year at the Sporting Life 10k.
Description
Help deliver healing through happiness to kids with cancer or serious illness and their families.
When a child is diagnosed with cancer or serious illness, it impacts the whole family. Kids miss out on simple childhood joys, household incomes are often cut in half as caregivers take on the full-time responsibility of caring for a sick child, and families struggle to make time for special experiences. When you donate to Campfire Circle you are supporting in-hospital, community and overnight camp programs that create opportunities for children to build friendships and social skills, develop self-confidence and resiliency, and improve their overall well-being. Through play-based experiences, you are helping empower kids to take back their childhood, regardless of their medical diagnosis. With your support, we can continue to offer our programs at no cost to families and grow our circle of care to provide additional play-based experiences across all four paediatric hospitals, and improve our medically supported and accessible overnight camps so that every eligible child can benefit from our innovative and impactful programs. Thank you for helping to build a world where children thrive and families heal. |
