Our Story

Hello everyone!!!

I am writing to you today to once again ask you for your help. Back in January 2023 I was sitting in a patient exam room in the pediatric oncology unit at McMaster hospital and was just informed that Sean’s chemo treatment that day was being pushed back again and that he needed another transfusion of platelets and that his white cell count was nonexistent so all the plans that we had made to keep him going had to be cancelled because he was at too high of risk for infection. I remember looking at his oncologist with tears in my eyes and asked him how is he ever going to go back to being a kid? And in that moment when I was absolutely terrified and desperate for an answer to my question he put his hand on my shoulder and began to tell me about an organization called Campfire Circle. Campfire Circle consists of a merger between the former Camp Ooch ( in muskoka founded in 1983) and   Camp Trillium ( in Waterford founded in 1984) they are an organization that provide programs and support to children and families that have been affected by pediatric cancer. Their programs range from overnight camps at those 2 locations to going to local sports games and music lessons. Their camps include options for patients to go away to camp alone as well as full family camp weeks. They also have sibling only camps for kids so they can be with sibling who are just like them. They also provide support and camp programs to families who children have lost their fight with cancer. All of these programs are available to these children until they turn 18 years old and then they get the chance to come back and be camp councilors themselves!!! I cant even begin to put into words what finding out about Campfire Circle has done for my family and for my children. Sean went from feeling like he was the only one who understood what he was going through and being embarrassed that he was sick and had lost his hair to running around without a hat on and not being afraid to be topless with his port because he got to be around other kids who knew exactly what he was going through!! So the reason for me reaching out to you all is because every year Campfire circle holds  10K fundraiser walk to raise money to continue to support their programs. This year they are offering and option to host your own walk in your city, so on Saturday May 25th 2024 at 1pm I will be hosting a 10K walk with all the donations going to the campfire circle foundation. The walk will begin at Monsignor Doyle catholic seconday school on myers rd. in Cambridge and we will take a 5K loop that will end off back at the school the plan is to do 2 laps to reach the 10K but not mandatory. I have created a team called “ the Cooper tribe” on the official fundraising website for this campfire circle event, in order to participate you can click on the link provided and register for the event. If you use the code COOPERTRIBESL10K24 it will waive the registration fee. Then you just search our team name and request to join the team and then it will give you the chance to donate. once registration closes all of the money our team raises will automatically be sent to their foundation. I have attached some pictures from some of the programs that we have participated in and I hope you enjoy them and I really hope to see you all out there its going to be wonderful experience and it would be so amazing to have you all walk down this rode again together!

Description

Help deliver healing through happiness to kids with cancer or serious illness and their families.

When a child is diagnosed with cancer or serious illness, it impacts the whole family. Kids miss out on simple childhood joys, household incomes are often cut in half as caregivers take on the full-time responsibility of caring for a sick child, and families struggle to make time for special experiences.

When you donate to Campfire Circle you are supporting in-hospital, community and overnight camp programs that create opportunities for children to build friendships and social skills, develop self-confidence and resiliency, and improve their overall well-being. Through play-based experiences, you are helping empower kids to take back their childhood, regardless of their medical diagnosis.

With your support, we can continue to offer our programs at no cost to families and grow our circle of care to provide additional play-based experiences across all four paediatric hospitals, and improve our medically supported and accessible overnight camps so that every eligible child can benefit from our innovative and impactful programs.

Thank you for helping to build a world where children thrive and families heal.
