My Story…
Life happens and training plans change - what was to be a marathon this October will now be a speedy 5km, a distance I am quickly falling in love with!
This fall, I am helping raise funds for The Stop Community Food Centre, an organization that does incredible work in my neighbourhood. The Stop believes that – while it is important to provide emergency food access and other services – these services do not truly address the long-term systemic barriers many people in our community face. Inadequate social assistance rates, working poverty, inflation, and marginalization all work against our neighbours. The Stop aims to provide immediate services but also focus on the long-term impacts we can make in regard to public policy.
Help me reach my goal fundraising goal of $555.00, support the impactful and necessary work that The Stop does.
Description
The Stop is an ideal charity partner because we believe that nutritious, sustainable, and culturally appropriate food is a human right for all. Between September 2023 and February 2024, we have delivered:
• 37,233 meals have been shared at our locations
• Over 1,000 visits to our Advocacy Office
• Seen a 39% increase in individuals needing support from our food bank for the same period year on year
As well as seeing an increase in need for our services, we’re also experiencing an increase in costs to run them. The cost of a food hamper in February 2023 cost $60 to produce. As of February 2024, that same hamper costs us $85.
