This September, I'm taking part in the Constantine Yorkville Run to support ALS Canada. I'm not a runner, so this will definitely be an interesting experience for me! 🤭

I started working at ALS Canada in 2022, and although I haven't been personally impacted by ALS, I feel compelled to do what I can to support the important work we do – advancing research, advocating for the ALS community, and providing essential community-based services.

One of the most difficult aspects of returning to work after my recent year of maternity leave was learning that some of the community members I had met prior to my leave had sadly passed away.  While I've worked for many worthy causes over the years, ALS is by far the most heartbreaking. 

You may be wondering, what exactly is ALS? It stands for Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, also known as Lou Gehrig's disease. It's a devastating illness that gradually paralyzes people, as the brain loses the ability to communicate with the body's muscles. Over time, as the muscles break down, those living with ALS will lose the ability to walk, talk, eat, swallow, and eventually, even breathe.

The stats around ALS are truly terrifying – there are no cures or effective treatments, and 80% of people with ALS die within 2-5 years of diagnosis. What's even more alarming is that 90-95% of all ALS cases occur in those who have no family history of the disease.

Fortunately, in Ontario, ALS Canada provides invaluable community-based services to people living with ALS and their families. We have a team of caring, kind, and resilient community leads who offer 1:1 support, helping people navigate this complex illness. The ALS Canada Equipment Loan Program also provides essential equipment and assistive devices, allowing people to retain some independence.
