OUR FINISH LINE SAYS ALS DONE!
Hello again. Grannie's Gang is back! This is our third year running the Falmouth Road Race for ALS One in support and honor of my mom and our Grannie, Ann Sermos.
Our family joined this community in the summer of 2021 when, following a few months of puzzling symptoms, my mom was diagnosed with ALS.
I wrote the blurb for my 2023 fundraising page in early February 2023. I was sitting on the bed with my mom, writing, and knowing that she would not be joining us in Falmouth that summer. It mattered that I was writing while she was still with us. We lost our mom, our Grannie, on February 20, 2023. ALS defeated her body. It never touched her humor or her love for others. Caring for her during this time will forever be the privilege of my life.
My mom never complained. As she eventually lost her voice completely, she was always waving her hands at us to get a cup of coffee or a glass of wine for the latest visitor. (Sometimes she was telling us to vacuum the baseboards.) She used any and all physical ability to love on all of her people, most notably her beloved grandchildren.
ALS is fatal. There are minimal treatments. While symptoms and timelines vary, the average amount of time that a person lives with ALS is 2-5 years. During this time muscles, and eventually quality of life, deteriorate.
If love could defeat ALS we would have won a long time ago. This disease needs money. We understand that for many of you, this is not the first time that you have supported this cause in honor of our family. We know that there are many worthy causes throughout the year that you could support. We are forever grateful that you choose to join us in hopes of a world without ALS.
We love you all. Just like Grannie taught us to.
