My Story…
When I was two weeks old, I was diagnosed with moderate-severe sensorineural hearing loss. My parents were shocked by this news, as there was no prior history of deafness in my family. In search of support with the challenge we then faced, my parents turned to the Clarke Schools for Hearing and Speech.
I attended Clarke’s former Bryn Mawr campus for my entire time in preschool. At Clarke, I received intensive speech and listening comprehension training from my teachers and language pathologists. Through trial and error—and occasional games of UNO—I learned how to differentiate one phoneme from another, developed strategies to listen in loud settings, and more. Moreover, for the first time in my life, I was in a community of kids who heard just like me.
Following my education at Clarke, I was able to successfully attend mainstream schools from kindergarten onwards, live abroad for a year, and even serve as a teacher myself in a mainstream classroom. At Clarke, I came to see my hearing loss not as a deficit, but rather as a means of empowerment and what makes me unique. As I run the Falmouth Road Race this August, I am eager to raise money for Clarke to work towards dismantling opportunity gaps for deaf/HoH children more broadly.
Description
At Clarke we teach children who are deaf or hard of hearing to listen and talk.
Children served by Clarke use advanced technologies, including cochlear implants and hearing aids, to maximize their access to sound. We work with children and their families from infancy through their teen years. Our teachers of the deaf, audiologists and speech-language pathologists have the background, training and experience to prepare children academically and socially for a world of limitless possibilities.
Clarke children listen and learn in the classroom, run and laugh with their friends on the playground, and have lives filled with music, sports, family and community. Many children who come to Clarke are ready to attend their neighborhood schools by preschool and kindergarten.
In addition to our work with children, we serve families and adults through a wide range of programs and services. With our extensive staff of experts, physical locations along the Eastern Seaboard and a robust teleservices program delivering services remotely, we strive to reach people with hearing loss at all stages of life.
