I'm running the Falmouth Road Race to END ALZ!
My family has been greatly affected by Alzheimer's. We know firsthand how difficult the disease is on not only those afflicted, but their families and caregivers as well. In the past three years, my grandmother and aunt were diagnosed with Alzheimer's. We watched my grandmother (my maternal grandmother) quickly deteriorate from a vibrant, excited, and healthy woman, to a quiet, frail, shell of her former self. For quite some time my mother became her primary caregiver, while I would step in and support her where possible. The toll that it took on her was immense. It was clearly emotionally, physically, and spiritually draining. Eventually, we made the decision to have our grandmother move into a memory care unit (Bridges in Mashpee).
My aunt, who has no children of her own and lived by herself, began displaying early signs of Alzheimer's. Despite her living in Hartford, Connecticut, my father stepped in and began making almost weekly trips to check in on her. Constantly driving 3+ hours to help at doctors’ appointments, ensure her bills were being paid, make general safety check-ins, schedule in-home nursing care, etc. Once it became clear that she could no longer make sound decisions of her own, he went through the process of gaining power of attorney. Through both relatives, my grandmother and aunt, we experienced and witnessed the many ways this disease can be difficult for both caregivers and patients alike.
Thank you for your support and contribution.
