Volunteer for this event
Volunteer details
Thank you volunteers!
We are so happy you are here, and we couldn't do it without you. Your participation makes this event safe, enjoyable, and run smoothly. Thank you for contributing in this way to this year's event.
All volunteers will receive refreshments, necessary equipment to fulfill the role (safety vest, flags, etc), and a small thank you gift.
Although we aim to place you in your preferred volunteer position we may have to assign you to another role to ensure the race runs smoothly. Please let us know as soon as possible if you are unable to fulfill your assigned volunteer role.
Please use Race Roster to register for your preferred volunteer position here. This helps to keep us organized and be able to communicate directly with you.
If you are a student collecting volunteer hours for school:
parent/guardian permission is required
bring your form to the event and a coordinator will sign off at the end of the event
we will place younger volunteers in more protected areas and leave the street crossings for adult volunteers
Course Marshals
Marshals make sure that participants can safely cross streets and intersections, and that runners and walkers are going the right way and stay on course. Marshals watch for traffic and stop vehicles until the course is clear of runners/walkers. Marshals may also answer questions from runners, drivers, or other pedestrians. Marshals are also encouraged to cheer on participants and inspire runners and walkers to keep on.
Marshals must check in with the Volunteer Coordinator at either 8:30 or 9:00 am, depending on which distance they are marshaling (1K or 3K/5K which shares a route and is combined). Marshals will be on site until the last runner passes their location, followed by the bike marshal bringing up the rear. Once the bike marshal has passed course marshals can return to the school to hand in their equipment, and collect their thank you gift.
Marshals are provided with a route map, safety vest, and for those at a street crossing, a brightly-coloured flag on a stick. Marshals must dress appropriately and be prepared to be in position for the duration of the event. Marshals will be provided with a specific location at which to stand, and in some cases that aren’t at a street crossing, sitting is possible (bring a chair if this applies to you). Familiarity with the course is key.
Bike Marshal/Rover
Bike marshals must be very comfortable on a bike. One leads the pack and the other follows the last runner/walker to make sure no one is left behind, so familiarity with the course is key. This course is on a mix of road, sidewalk, and crushed gravel trails so a bike that can handle that terrain is needed. Helmets are mandatory. You will be on site from 8:30am through about 11:00 am, or until the last participant finishes, no later than noon.
Bag Check/Bib Pick-up
Bag check volunteers hold onto small bags or backpacks that participants want to stow while they run or walk. Bag check volunteers mark the bags with the participant’s bib number and then hand it back out after the race. We may also ask you to hand out any race kits that were not picked up the day before. You will be sitting or standing at a table from 8:00am until the event ends at noon.
Photo Ops
Photo op volunteers take group or individual photos of participants before or after their race at a designated photo op station. Volunteers will use participants’ own cameras or phones to take photos, making sure to incorporate the signage and backdrop built for this purpose. Some general familiarity with cameras and phones is ideal.
Course Setup
Course setup volunteers are up early to get equipment set up on the course. This will involve meeting the setup crew at 6:30 am at École Sage Creek School, unloading equipment from the organizers’ vehicles, walking along certain sections of the course to place signage, pylons, and other course marking equipment, and checking the course for any safety hazards as you go. Dressing for the weather is important, as is proper footwear.
Course Teardown
Course teardown volunteers work after the event ends to retrieve equipment from the course and load it into the organizers’ vehicles. This will involve staying after the event (or meeting at 11:30) at École Sage Creek School, walking along certain sections of the course to pick up signage, pylons, and other course marking equipment, and picking up any trash that may have been discarded during the event. Dressing for the weather is important, as is proper footwear.
Finish line management
Finish line management volunteers will be responsible for recording the finish order of 1K participants (writing down the bib numbers, in order, of finishers). You may also assist with the handing out of medals, keeping spectators out of the way of finishers, and directing finishers to food, bathrooms, etc. Dressing for the weather is important, as is proper footwear. You will be standing at the finish line from 8:15 until the last finisher comes in, before noon.
Volunteer check-in / Info table
Volunteer check-in/info table volunteers hand out volunteer kits to any volunteers who were not able to pick them up at race kit pickup. This will involve checking people in and out of their roles, providing them with safety equipment and instructions, and providing directions to those not familiar with Sage Creek. You will also be the main source of info or general questions from participants and spectators, so familiarity with Sage Creek and the event details will be key. You will be sitting or standing at a table from 7:30am until the event ends at noon.
Merch sales
Merchandise sales volunteers take care of selling merchandise (leftover 2021 items, plus any available 2022 shirts). This will involve handling cash, keeping good records, and being detail-oriented to make sure sizes and quantities are accounted for. You will be sitting or standing at a table from 8:00am until the event ends at noon.
