My Story…
At the age of nine, I was diagnosed with Type One Diabetes. For months, my loved ones watched me become very ill and defeated as we attended various clinics and hospitals to get to the bottom of my illness. When we finally got my diagnosis, my world completely changed. I suddenly had to start carrying around needles, juice boxes, and other medical supplies everywhere I went. I was now “different” and felt alienated by those around me. My blood sugars started to dictate what I could or could not do. I was angry at my body for this disease and it took me years to come to terms with it.
I have lived with Type One Diabetes for 11 years now. It has been hard and often times feels exhausting; however, I am proud of how far I have come. I am learning to take control of my chronic illness and not let it control me. I am running this race to show myself that I can do whatever I set my mind to, despite physical limitations I may face. My hope is to raise awareness about T1D and to encourage those living with it who felt I once did!
