My Story…
My little brother, Johnny, passed away in May from an accidental drug overdose. He had been sober for almost ten years. I don’t know when he started using again, he was hiding it well. He did not “look” or “act” like a drug addict. He was such a handsome boy. He had a good job and a nice car. He paid his bills and kept himself, along with everything around him meticulously clean. He had a family that loved him, good friends that he had since childhood and a girlfriend he was planning a future with. We are all guilty of judging a book by its cover but what about when it’s the complete opposite? What about when the cover looks perfect but the pages inside are not. Addiction can happen to anyone. I know my brother knew he needed help. I am also sure that my brother was embarrassed that he had relapsed after so long which probably discouraged him from asking for help. The stigma that goes along with addiction needs to end. Addicts need to know they can ask for help without judgement.
