My Story…
I experienced a heart attack in June that was the result of a Spontaneous Coronary Artery Dissection (SCAD). I am still recovering however my goal is to walk the 5k SCADaddle for research on September 7th here in San Diego! SCAD is not very well understood and research has only recently been gathering steam in the last 20 years. It makes up <1% of all heart attacks seen at the ER, however it is responsible for approximately 25% of heart attacks in women under the age of 50. SCAD is commonly associated with systemic vascular conditions in which arteries are weakened and artery dissections or aneurysms can occur. Recurrence of SCAD is possible with a 14% likelihood within 3 years. Finding out how to reduce the risk of having a recurrent SCAD is my key interest!
