My Story…
My name is Melissa Malone and I'm excited to be participating in the the 2024 Teal Trot as an ovarian cancer SURVIVOR!
I was diagnosed at the age of 38 years old (July 23) with a rare form of Epithelial Cell Ovarian Cancer, called clear cell, which developed from endometriosis. I had debulking surgery and 6 cycles of chemotherapy which ended in December 2023.
As of December 29, 2023, there is no evidence of disease. As of 8/5/2024, I am eight months cancer free and I couldn't have made it through this journey without the support of my wife, Maryam, my family, friends, co-workers and my GOCA/Ovarian Cancer community.
I appreciate any and all support for this event as the Georgia Ovarian Cancer Alliance (GOCA) does so much to bring awareness to Ovarian Cancer and also educate not just anyone born with ovaries, but medical students, spouses, families, and more. Early diagnosis is key to ovarian cancer but since there is not a test, it is critical that folks with ovaries know the symptoms, risks and also how to advocate for themselves. GOCA is doing this!
The 2023 Teal Trot was 2 months after I was diagnosed. I was able to attend last year's teal trot 2 days after chemo and was able to make it halfway through the race. Looking forward to finishing this year!
