"Many of these parents have been given life timelines for their children. In our case, Krisanna was 8 when she was invited to camp. We had battled two aggressive tumors at that point. Like other parents, I will never forget hearing a doctor tell me she had cancer: 'Sit down and listen. Your child has a rare, aggressive brain tumor. There are no odds for survival beyond six months. This Christmas will likely be her last.'
In a blink, the camper and family lives have been turned upside down! Time is precious. I cannot overstate what camp meant for my girl and the campers. I do not exaggerate when I say these campers lived for the joy, hope, and love that define Rapahope.
That camp energy tempered storms and buoyed highs all year long. It maintained a rhythm and inspired hope. YOU, this magic, this heavenly space in which she was free from me and the hospital and people who looked at her quizzically or asked awkward questions or pointed and made fun. This week inspires hope that carries these campers far beyond those gates at the end of the drive.
I don’t know a more powerful way to tell anyone how special, how awesome, how amazing Rapahope is than to tell you that when we told my girl she was going to die soon, her first thought after family was going to Rapahope.
The leadership at Rapahope create a spectacularly magical space where Hickman lines and missing limbs and bald heads are just a thing. Here, life is a celebration every single day, filled with joy, fun, and courage."
