My name is Megan Plunkett. I’m married and a proud mom of two beautiful boys. While I was pregnant with my second son, I discovered a lump in my right breast. Everyone around me — including some professionals — assumed it was just a clogged duct. I kept an eye on it, but didn’t think much of it at the time.

After giving birth, the lump was still there months later. I had already stopped breastfeeding due to some struggles and noticed there was still some discharge, but I figured my body just hadn’t dried up yet.

It wasn’t until February that I pushed to see my doctor. Even then, my concerns were brushed off. I insisted on a mammogram — and thank God I did. The radiology team took it seriously and scheduled a biopsy that same day. Just days later, I was called in for an MRI, and shortly after that, I heard the words no one wants to hear: breast cancer.

I was 30 years old, with two babies under two.

From there, everything moved quickly. I found an amazing breast surgeon who made me feel seen and supported, and one of the best plastic surgeons around. I underwent a double mastectomy and will begin preventive treatments this September.

Adjusting to life after surgery has been tough. I had just given birth to my last baby, and I missed out on a lot with him because of cancer — the stress, the appointments, the recovery. It’s been emotional and overwhelming. I remember asking myself, How is this happening to me? But I’ve come to realize that life throws battles at those strong enough to fight them.

This foundation has been a lifeline through it all. I would have felt so alone without their support.
