My Story…
Housing being treated as a commodity for profit; this is why we are in this mess. Those of us with expendable income, let's put our money where our mouth is and reinvest resources into communities that need it.
Not understanding exactly what the cause is? I did some digging and tried to explain it in my own clear terms:
St. Clare’s is a private not for profit landlord that focuses on developing (building) and managing affordable housing complexes. One of them is on Sudbury street, near where Mike and I used to live - it looks just like a typical condo, except without all the energy-wasting floor-to-ceiling glass curtain walls and random columns in the middle of the unit (iykyk).
Approximately 75% of tenants of all St Clare's units are subsidized and pay a rent-geared-to-their-income (30% of income). The rest, 25% unsubsidized tenants, pay a rent that is at or below the CMHC Average Market Rent ($1715 for 1 bedroom in Toronto). All units are the same, regardless of being subsidized or not.
If you want subsidized or rent-geared-to-income-housing, you have to be referred to St. Clare’s by one of our Partner Agencies. These partner agencies provide ongoing support services to the tenants that the agency refers to the buildings.
Description
Please help me grease the wheels! I’m cycling around Toronto to help end homelessness.
St. Clare’s is an innovative non-profit organization that uses a unique housing model that serves as an avenue into housing for people who chronically struggle with homelessness. And they're more than a social justice landlord. Since 1998, St. Clare's has established 762 affordable housing units in 7 of Toronto's downtown neighbourhoods. Every donation to Gear Up for Housing goes directly to St. Clare's development activities to establish much-needed, deeply affordable housing.
Please consider sponsoring my ride with a donation. All donations receive a tax receipt. Any amount, no matter how small, helps us move closer to ending homelessness.
