My "Why"
I'M A RUNNER!
I've always run - since I was a little girl. It started with running away from my two older brothers.
In Elementary school, my running became competitive, competing in the 100m, 200m, 400m, and 800m track events. In Highschool, I tried longer cross-country distances. I nearly died!
In my 30's, something about the longer distances, and training for them, became a pursuit. In 2006 at age 36, I completed my first half marathon.
I kept running long distances, with half marathons being my preferred distance.
In 2015, at age 45, with my best friend at my side, I completed my first marathon!
55KMS THIS JUNE!
On June 22nd, to inspire and lead everyone to move their bodies, to bring awareness to just 55 of the students at the school Haiti in My Heart operates, and to celebrate my 55th birthday, I'm running 55km! 1km for each of the 55 students who need a Champion this upcoming school year.
I plan to arrive at the 5km finish line about 12:30pm to join everyone in the Finish Line Festivities. And hey, if its not my day (as runners know can happen), I can always get on a scooter to the finish line!
CHAMPION OUR CHILDREN IN HAITI
I use my mind and heart every day for our children in Haiti, leading our team at HIMH. June 22 is a truly special day where I’ll be using my body and spirit, too!
My goal is to raise $1,800 - 1 year of education for a student for each of my three brothers (only the two eldest in the pic below).
Come join me in creating lasting change for children in Haiti: make a gift, or Lace Up your own shoes for our students!
And yeah, the BFF and I continue to run together, through life's joys and challenges! You just might see her on the course with me - keep your eyes peeled!
Description
Help end devastating poverty in Haiti. Become a Child's Champion!
There is massive potential in Haiti’s youth. 70% of the population is under the age of 35. These are the country’s leaders, professionals, teachers, skilled trades people, agriculturalists, engineers, healthcare professionals and workers - future mothers and fathers.
The waste of human capital is one of the primary sources of instability in Haiti over the last 50 years, making it difficult for the economy to grow and ensure the social progress Haiti needs. The events in Haiti in recent years (the gang blockade of the seaport in September 2022 and take over 80% of Port au Prince in March 2024) are a direct result of the lack of investment in Haiti’s primary human capital.
For nearly 15 years, Haiti in My Heart has educated 300 children annually, aged 3-18 years, to build this human capital. The school's annual student retention rate is 90%+, with a 90% pass rate of the Grade 9 students completing their government exams.
