My Story…
It was cancer that brought me to stand up paddle boarding, and I'm proud to bring SUP to cancer care, for families that have a child with cancer.
At the end of the pandemic 4 years ago, I had two surgeries to remove cancer in my mid-body. The surgeries and adjacent care were successful and I set about to restore my balance, literally, which was altered from the surgeries. I'd always wanted to learn stand up paddle boarding, and decided it would be the perfect rehab to rediscover my centre of gravity.
It was, and it is! I'm still a bit wobbly (three years a paddler and still...) but hope strings eternal and I keep gaining confidence on the ocean.
For families that have a child with cancer, *everything* changes as priorities focus on getting their youngster all the care that's available. Island Kids Cancer Association takes care of *all* family members, bringing fun, resources, and practical help.
This is my second year at Paddle for Health with South Island SUP, Mer Tales Ocean Journeys, and our happy squad of paddlers. Please join us on Sept 6 at Willows beach, or sponsor me or our team, thank you!
