🌟 Introducing Skate4Grant's New and Improved Grief Challenge Run! 🌟
(Formerly known as the Ashby Challenge Hill Race)
This race started in 2021 to honor the memory of Ashby Alumni Dean Ellingson and Grant Finkelson, but we know that grief is a journey for everyone in different ways. This year, we invite you to run in memory of anyone you are grieving. Whether it’s a loved one, a colleague, a friend, a pet, or any incredible being who touched your life, you can honor them by participating in their memory. Their name and/or photo will be included along the route, so their spirit runs with us every step. ❤️
The journey along the breathtaking gravel country roads of Seven Sisters Prairie in rural Ashby, Minnesota, challenges the physical cycles of grief. We find ourselves shocked by the steep hills of denial and pain that spark rage and bargaining. When we find ourselves testing the course, it leads us to depressed valleys among the wide-open skies, golden fields, and peaceful views, where we find a moment to accept that love and memories are never lost.
Come run or walk with us, whether in-person or in-spirit, to heal, connect, and remember. 🌾
Participants can choose between:
- 5K route: 1.5 miles of hilly gravel, then return on the same trail to complete the 3.2 miles.
- 5-mile route: a 1.2-mile stretch of level ground along Highway 78 with an up-close view of Lake Christina, with a finish of 4 miles of gravel roads and 16 hills.
- In-spirit routes: if you can't make the race, choose from a 5K or 5-mile route wherever you are and run or walk with us in-spirit; we'd still love to honor your loved ones and will share them along our route as a tribute (we'll be sure to share pictures with you!).
Event registration + a t-shirt is $25. Those who register before August 1st will be entered to win a gift card!

We know last year's routes weren't perfect, and we are making it right! We solemnly swear that these routes will be clearly marked with signs, mile markers, and easy-to-follow paths. Please don’t let last year’s bumps in the road keep you from joining us for this powerful and healing experience. We promise a smooth and inspiring race for everyone!
