My Story…
In memory of Dale Sawchuk,
Dad was not only an amazing father but he was known as an outgoing, funny, athletic, and energetic person. He lived his life with such passion. He was always positive, a typical 'happy go lucky' individual. He was honest, genuine and hardworking. In addition, Dad was an active participant within his community and you could count on him to lend a helping hand.
Sadly my Dad suffered from depression and severe anxiety during the last year of his life. It was upsetting to watch his vibrant personality change so rapidly before our eyes. Dad, along with most, didn't understand depression and why he couldn't 'just get over it'. Unfortunately he battled this illness in silence worried he would be judged or that people would think less of him. That's the reality of mental health in our society. Many people who are effected feel ashamed or embarrassed and isolate themselves as Dad did following his diagnosis. The question remains, why does someone who is so full of life one day end their life? This clearly demonstrates the power of depression.
As an emergency nurse, I've seen so many lives effected by mental health and in many different ways. Individuals and family members that don't know where else to go. I never thought my own life would one day be effected and honestly I've never felt more helpless. My Dad's experience has truly changed my perspective. I have now realized the need for more to be done to help those who struggle with a mental illness. I want to continue telling my Dad's tragic story in order to bring awareness to the devastating effects of depression. And what family members and loved ones can do to help and where they can go to receive the appropriate care. Despite my profession and experience I too felt lost.
An illness of the mind requires treatment and support the same as a physical illness. My goal is to assist in eliminating the stigma that is associated with mental health and suicide through awareness and education. Thank you for taking the time to read this❤️
In loving memory of my Dad
