My Story…
I always wondered about Beau's reading. During covid, I got a rare glimpse into the classroom through Zoom and heard others reading. I continually checked in with teachers and they assured me he was on track. Then came 3rd grade and a cross country move and a new school. I volunteered to lead a reading group and again saw firsthand his peers reading compared to him. I raised it to his teacher, she already had him on her radar. His DIBELS test results confirmed the risk. I had him evaluated through an agency and it was confirmed. Dyslexia. I thought it was a black and white, yes/no thing. But it's not. It's an intepretation of his cognitive ability versus his ability to decode. Fast forward again, and he's a straight A student but has to work HARD at it. He's so resilient, and focused, and determined. And all I can do is be his biggest fan and provide the support and guidance as he navigates.
So, we are raising awareness and running in honor of Beau and all of the other people navigating this world with dyslexia!
