My Story…

Paws for Purpose: Our St. John Therapy Dog Journey

Since February 2024, my therapy dogs Pilot and Gunther and I have discovered the profound rewards of volunteering with the St. John Therapy Dog Program. What began as my desire to give back has transformed into a deeply fulfilling mission that benefits all of us.

Making a Difference Where It Matters

We focus primarily on two critical areas: supporting Hamilton's Victim Witness Program and helping students during exam periods. In courthouse settings, I've watched Pilot and Gunther provide calming comfort to those facing difficult legal proceedings. A gentle nuzzle from Pilot or Gunther's steady presence can ease anxiety and offer much-needed emotional support during overwhelming moments.

During exam seasons at local schools, I see my therapy dogs work their magic on stressed students. The simple act of a student petting Gunther or receiving Pilot's signature paw shake transforms tense study environments into more manageable, peaceful spaces.

Growing Together

This volunteer work has been transformative for all three of us. I've watched Pilot develop remarkable intuition about when someone needs comfort, while Gunther has grown more confident in his therapeutic role. For me, each session brings new insights into community needs and the healing power of human-animal connections.

Beyond our core mission, we participate in various Hamilton community events, spreading comfort and joy wherever we go. Nearly a year in, our volunteer work has evolved from community service into a true calling—one that enriches our own lives while serving others in vulnerable moments.

The St. John Therapy Dog Program has given us purpose, connection, and countless reminders that sometimes the simplest gestures—a wagging tail and an open heart—can make the biggest difference.
