My Story…
I began the Walk for Civil Liberties five years ago to raise money for CCLA to support their critical work protecting fundamental rights which are the foundation of our democracy. Since then, I am sad to say that we have seen a sharp rise in autocracy worldwide and governments seem to be increasingly willing to ignore or steamroll over the rights that I once thought were unassailable. And while I believe that Canada is and can continue to be a beacon to the world of equality and justice, you don't need to look very far to see how quickly we could suffer the same fate unless someone holds the governments to task - just look at the way our provincial governments are now routinely invoking or threatening to invoke the “notwithstanding clause” – so that they can cast aside the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms at their whim Please add your voice to the chorus of Canadians who stand together to protect our civil liberties by joining me on the walk or sponsoring my walk.
