Who we are + what we do

Founded in 1970 by families whose loved ones had been diagnosed with type 1 diabetes (T1D), Breakthrough T1D is a tax-exempt nonprofit 501(c)3 organization. As the leading global type 1 diabetes research and advocacy organization, we help make everyday life better while driving toward cures. We are opening doors that were once closed by T1D diagnosis. We lead the way to more effective solutions by connecting the brightest minds to advance treatments, influence policy, and improve access to care. By driving innovation forward, we will make T1D a thing of the past.  


Team Breakthrough T1D (formerly JDRF) participants join in on the fun of the Pittsburgh Marathon Weekend of Events through miles, medals, and most importantly moments! This is your moment to fundraise and help turn type one into type none! There’s something for everyone at this event. When you join Team Breakthrough T1D , we’re committed to supporting you before and throughout the race weekend. Know that every step you take brings us closer to our finish line—a world without T1D.

Full Marathon  

  • Raise $100 and receive the Team Breakthrough T1D performance t-shirt

  • Raise $500 and receive a full discount on your registration fee

Half Marathon 

  • Raise $100 and receive the Team Breakthrough T1D  performance t-shirt

Marathon Relay Team
