My Story…
Hello! My name is Greg Harrigle, and I am going to run the Pittsburgh marathon in May. I've been a runner from a very young age, competing in cross country in middle/high school and running the Columbus half last year - and I owe it all to my local children's hospital. When I was very young I got diagnosed with Kawasaki disease for the second time (a disease affecting the heart) and my parents were told that there was a serious chance I would not be able to do strenuous cardiovascular activities (sports, running, etc) for the rest of my life. Thankfully, due to the care of Akron Children's hospital I made a full recovery, and I am able to run, mountain bike, backpack, and do all of the various hobbies I have come to love. Please consider donating to the UPMC Children's Hospital Fund so that we can contribute to making sure all children are given the freedom to pursuit whatever activities bring them joy all throughout their lives. As part of Team Children's, my participation in the 2023 Pittsburgh Marathon supports UPMC Children's Hospital Foundation.
Funds support the patients and families served by UPMC Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh. Last year UPMC Children's Hospital had over 1 million patient visits and many of the programs, initiatives, and resources that make UPMC Children’s so special are funded by philanthropic gifts. Things like distraction therapy which provides patients something else to focus on during their medical procedures, the Child Life Department which provides many activities to create a sense of normalcy for hospitalized children, and the Free Care Fund which covers the cost of medical care for those that cannot afford it. These areas are not covered by insurance, yet are critically important to helping families face the many challenges that accompany a child’s treatment.
