My Story…
I’m so pumped to be sharing this. As some of you may know, the Strong Like Sloane Foundation is a local charity that raises money for pediatric cancer programs. Last year they had a team with over 185 runners that raised an incredible $112,000. I desperately wanted to participate last year, but I was busy fighting for my life and was unsure if I would get the opportunity.
Against all odds, last April I had my 3rd lifesaving surgery after months of chemotherapy and began a slow and arduous recovery. After struggling through checkpoint after checkpoint, I slowly started gaining more momentum. After my last clear scan in January it was becoming more evident to me that I might actually be able to participate this year. So guess what I did? I went and signed up for the FULL marathon!!! I’ve never done one before and can think of no greater cause. I draw a lot of my inspiration from Terry Fox as he started his journey across Canada with the hopes of improving cancer care across our country. Not that I compare myself to him in any way, but when I reflect on the last 4 years of my life and what I have been through, there is one overwhelmingly powerful thought that I cannot shake.
I can’t believe they do this to kids.
This is no way a shot at our current system or healthcare providers, they do incredible work, but the thought of a child going through what I did is unbearable. I figure if Terry can run halfway across Canada with one leg, surely, I can do a marathon with one kidney. I can think of no better way to celebrate my body working with me again, instead of against me.
I’m doing this for my kids.
I’m doing this for your kids.
And if you don’t have any, these are your kids too.
If we aren’t living our lives in a way to make things better for the next generation, I’m not really sure what the point of being here is. I believe deep in my soul that we are so close to revolutionizing the way we look at this disease and this is a great opportunity to be a part of that. I truly feel that our kids will not fear this disease the same way I do as an elder millennial. If you feel compelled to be a part of the solution like I do, there are 3 ways you can do so:
Join the team and run! (5k, 10k, half, and full marathon) Donate to the team Share the absolute heck outta this with everyone you know!
As an inherent protector, both personally and professionally, I simply can’t sit on the sidelines knowing we’re so close.
I’ve said this before, and I’ll say it again. There is no better purpose in life than to perish trying to achieve the great and impossible. The only true failure is shrinking away from life's challenges.
