Bide Awhile is a not-for-profit, no-kill animal shelter that has been rescuing, caring for and rehoming animals since 1969. Our mission is to provide compassionate care, rehabilitation, and a safe haven for companion animals in need. We believe they deserve respect, dignity, and a chance for a happy life regardless of age, health status or breed.

Meet Neptune (now Sadie) - the 2025 Bide Awhile Blue Nose Mascot!

Neptune first arrived at the shelter in late December 2024 alongside her 9 siblings. These pups were an accidental litter and the result of two intact adult dogs that both lived under the same roof.

Ten puppies is a huge litter for any dog, let alone a first-time mother. Knowing that it was only a short time before this problem repeated itself, we offered to take the puppies into our care and spay the mother dog through our Moms & Babies program.

Once the pups were old enough to leave their mother, Neptune and her siblings were brought into our care. It was a whirlwind of an intake process with 10 wild puppies running around the room while we tried to sort, name, and do our initial health checks.

After some time getting settled into their new temporary home, we started to see some personality blossom in the pups. Neptune was one of the first ones to be noticed by staff for her calm demeaner and attentiveness while the other pups ran around. She would often be seen observing the others and would wait patiently at the back of the crowd when it was time for food. She was a true sweetheart and was eager to please.

Once all their vetting and assessments were completed and the vet gave us the all clear for adoption – the home-finding process began. We received hundreds of shares online and tens of thousands of views for these sweet little pups. Adoption appointments started filling up quickly and on the very first one, little Neptune was chosen out of all the pups by her new family.

Having 10 puppies in our care brought a lot of fun but also brought a lot of work and financial cost to the shelter. Each puppy was spayed or neutered, microchipped, vaccinated and dewormed before heading off to their new home. Not to mention the care, medications, and a whole lot of puppy food that was needed to keep them happy and healthy. Overall, these 10 puppies cost the shelter thousands of dollars.

Fundraisers like our Tails in Motion team and the Charity Challenge are how we continue to care for animals just like Neptune and her siblings. Every dollar makes a difference.

From the team and the animals at Bide Awhile – thank you for helping us save the lives of animals in need!
