My Story…
I have a few hobbies that bring me happiness: exercise, dogs, and the Philadelphia Eagles. My first hobby was also my talent: athletics. I enjoyed playing sports, engaging in fitness activities, and working out at the gym. Secondly, I am also absolutely in love with dogs; I have two mental health therapy dogs. And then there are those Philadelphia Eagles. Both of my dogs proudly wear their Eagles jerseys throughout the season.
I have always been active and valued health and fitness. However, my life changed significantly when I was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes. I felt that something had been taken away from me that I could not get back. I did not know how to manage my blood sugar levels or use insulin while exercising. I was terrified of my blood sugar levels dropping too low, and it just seemed impossible, so I gave up on exercising altogether.
Everything changed when I learned that athletes with type 1 diabetes were competing in the Olympics. I came out of my shell and slowly figured out how it was possible. After I could managed it, I progressed from walking to group classes to CrossFit. It was through CrossFit that I started running again. I saw how strong my body was and realized I hadn't lost anything; I felt like myself again. I feel at home in the gym.
When I heard about a charity run called Run for Life 5K benefiting Type 1 diabetes, I set a goal to simply finish the race. I ran it in 38 minutes. That's when I got hooked. After running a few 5Ks, I decided to take on the challenge of running a half-marathon, and so the training began.
I set my sights on Grandma’s Marathon in Duluth, Minnesota. I will be participating in the Great Grandma’s Challenge. On Friday, June 20, 2025, I will be running the William A. Irvin 5K, and on Saturday, June 21, I will run the Garry Bjorklund Half Marathon.
I have chosen to be an official charity runner for the race, selecting Animal Allies in Duluth, MN, a charity partner of the Grandma's Marathon. My goal is to raise $600. The Humane Society’s Animal Alliance in Duluth, MN, is a long-established pillar of the Animal Welfare Community. They have served the lower St. Louis County area for over 60 years. They support the humane welfare of pets through education, advocacy, fostering, and adoption. All funds raised will go directly to Animal Alliance.
