My Story…
Last year I went into anaphylaxis. What started with hives and fatigue eventually led to a diagnosis of an autoimmune disease: UCTD, or early lupus.
Leaving law so early in my career was not what I planned. I’ve felt a lot of guilt: guilt that I was wasting my degree, that I was a failure, that maybe I could have “pushed through” longer.
But this is exactly why I want to be open about my story. In law, we don’t talk enough about chronic illness. We don’t talk about the shame lawyers feel when they need to step back, or the culture that makes us believe our worth is only tied to how hard or long we can work.
That silence has to change. At the end of the day, the law is just a job, and no job is worth your health, physical or mental.
To mark my last day as a lawyer, Aiden and I will be virtually running the 2025 TCS Toronto Waterfront Marathon in the month of October for Lupus Canada. 💜 Even if you can’t donate, please take a moment to learn about the work they do to support Canadians living with lupus and cheer on my progress.
Donate to help Rebecca raise money for 2025 TCS Toronto Waterfront Marathon’s fundraising campaign.
