Our story…
Autism impacts thousands of families across Ontario, shaping access to education, healthcare, and essential supports. Many face long wait times for assessments, limited resources, and the financial and emotional challenges of navigating complex care systems. Autism Ontario plays a crucial role in addressing these barriers by offering direct support programs, advocacy, and resources for families, while also contributing to important autism research. Through education, community outreach, and collaboration with experts, they are advancing understanding and improving quality of life for individuals on the spectrum and their loved ones.
Being the older sister to my brother Franco, who has autism, has taught me a kind of love that goes far beyond words. Although he’s non-verbal, his laughter, expressions, and the way he reaches for my hand speak volumes. He has shown me patience, empathy, and how to celebrate victories—no matter how small. Franco may not communicate the way others do, but his presence fills our home with a language all his own: one of pure connection.
Growing up, my brother was fortunate to have access to supports that fostered his growth and shaped his quality of life. Unfortunately, with current political shifts, funding for children with autism has been reduced, leaving many families without the resources they need. Autism Ontario is working to bridge this gap, offering programs for individuals with autism of all ages and their families—helping them reach their full potential, just as my brother has.
One of the most rewarding things about living with someone who has autism is watching them overcome personal hurdles. Too often, people see autism as a limitation, but every individual on the spectrum has unique strengths that prove there is life and possibility beyond the diagnosis.
In honour of my brother, I have decided to run my first 5km race—despite my own challenge with asthma—to experience the same sense of accomplishment that individuals with autism feel as they conquer their daily goals.
I would be honoured to have as many people as possible join our team, but if you can’t participate, your support through a donation of any amount would still mean the world.
Autism affects 1 in 3 children in Canada, meaning there’s a good chance you know someone on the spectrum. To honour these individuals, we will print their first names on the back of our race day shirts. If you have a name you’d like included, please email it to Kacianwhyte@gmail.com. Together, we can run for a future with greater understanding, support, and opportunity for everyone on the spectrum.
