Our story…
Hello! We are a group of runners from the Sanofi, a global healthcare and pharmaceutical company. We chase the miracles of science to save lives. Our team is running the waterfront marathon and we have partnered with United Way Greater Toronto to help ameliorate poverty in the GTA.
Many of us in the Sanofi Run Club are from the AI CoE, which is in our downtown Toronto office, so poverty in Toronto is an issue that hits quite close to home for us. It’s not too difficult to see the challenges people are facing just in the couple blocks around the office.
The solution to the problem is not a trivial one, yet United Way is a charity with deep roots in the area and a clear strategic plan. The focus is on strengthening a network of agencies and building hubs. The closest one to us is west neighborhood house, not too far from our downtown office. These hubs support people with housing, training, food, mental health and building community. Here are some success numbers from last year:
- 43,300 immigrants and refugees received support to connect with others, the community or needed services
- 122,000 residents accessed nutritious and culturally relvant food
- 11,000 individuals experiences homelessness obtained emergency and/or respite shelter
- 51,700 individuals gained the tools and resources to effectively manage mental health or addictions challenges
For more information, check out their website. They have a great archive of videos of these services in action as well as the strategic plan and results from previous years (which these figures were cited from): United Way
