Our story…
This is my oldest brother. August 28, 2025 would have been his 53rd birthday. Unfortunately after a long battle with Colon cancer, he didn’t have the opportunity to celebrate his birthday with his family this year. During the past 2 years 4 months since his diagnosis, he went through constant rounds of chemo, and continued to push through regular life on a daily basis. He managed to find the strength within himself to train for and complete the Toronto marathon last year, only 2 days later starting his next round of chemo. Some days his training was running with his chemo bag around his neck. He always had his family supporting him, and some great friends that trained with him (whom I was lucky enough to meet at his celebration of life) along the way
Jeremy, to me, has always been that hard working, smart, frugal (to say the least), caring, stubborn and determined person who often would speak and joke with people with his genuine smile and sarcastic mannerism that we all knew and loved. He was talented in music, sports, and school (where he’d completed a degree in electronic engineering and was on his way to retirement 55!!) He did have some changes in his ultimate life plan, where he tried a couple different career paths, but ultimately life itself came along and took him at 52. When he passed away on July 14, he had his loving Mom, wife, and kids around him, and the days leading up to, we all had some really great conversations, and laughs while he was still in sooo much pain, that he never wanted anyone else to know about (only those super close to him new what kind of pain he may have been in).
About a month before his passing Jeremy and I had made a plan to take part in the Toronto marathon again this year, though this time I ago would run the ½ and he still wanted to run the full. He was very real, however, and knew at that point in his life, a full was more than highly unlikely for him, so decided he would aim for the 5km, and to cheer me on for the ½. We wanted to do the race, not only for him and all his accomplishments, but for Gildas Club, the charity that has helped him, and his family cope with the realities of his cancer (the good, the bad, and the ugly), all the while meeting other families who are doing the same. His own family has made some wonderful friends along the way which has helped them through these very difficult last 2 years.
Well, Jeremy will still be supporting me, even though it is not in person, and I am determined to complete it virtually, here in Calgary. Korban and Taylor (my daughters) and Dave will be accompanying me, and providing support and encouragement, while Josh will be also run in Kelowna where he is at University. Please consider donating to our efforts in memory of Jeremy. All funds will go directly to Gildas Club of Toronto.
Description
Please support our team as we run for Gilda’s Toronto in the October 2025 hybrid TCS Toronto Waterfront Marathon, ½ Marathon and 5K. Gilda’s Toronto provides cancer support programs free of charge to adults living with cancer and support for their teens and children who are experiencing cancer-related stress due to living with someone with cancer. Gilda’s Toronto also provides bereavement support to those who have lost someone to cancer. By supporting the Gilda’s Toronto team, you ensure that individuals and families impacted by cancer continue to receive the emotional, educational and health-focused cancer support they require to help with cancer related anxiety. The need for Gilda’s Toronto has never been greater as there was a 24% increase in new membership just last year. In the words of a young cancer patient and Gilda’s member participant: Finding the 20s and 30s support group at Gilda’s Toronto was like turning my head and meeting others who were on the cancer rollercoaster with me. They understood my loss and I understood theirs. I felt seen and heard. Being in this group helped me come to terms with what cancer stole from me at such a young age.” Aneesha R. By supporting our team, you help Gilda’s Toronto continue to fulfill its vision – to help people live, while living with cancer.
Thank you.
