My Story…
This fall, Lola and I are doing our first ever 5K race together! Running this race as mother and daughter is not only a fun new challenge, but also a meaningful way to share a fitness goal and raise funds for POGO – the Pediatric Oncology Group of Ontario. POGO is dedicated to making sure every child with cancer in Ontario has access to the best care possible, no matter where they live. They provide vital support for kids and families during and after treatment, from financial assistance to education, research, and survivorship programs.
Running together for POGO feels like the perfect way to channel our energy and gratitude into something bigger than ourselves.
We’d love your support as we take on this challenge and help POGO continue their important work. Thank you for cheering us on!
Description
Hello!
This August, I’ll be lacing up for PUMA Toronto Women's Fall 8K/5K to raise awareness and critical funds for an important cause: The Pediatric Oncology Group of Ontario (POGO).
POGO ensures that everyone affected by childhood cancer has access to the best possible care and support—from a child’s diagnosis, through treatment and into survivorship. For now, for life.
There are over 4,300 families in Ontario with a child in cancer treatment or follow-up care each year. More than 85% of children diagnosed with cancer in Ontario will survive, but many of these survivors will experience complications either due to the disease itself, complex surgical procedures, or the rigorous rounds of radiation and chemotherapy they were given during treatment.
Funds raised at the PUMA Toronto Women's Fall 8K/5K will:
- provide financial assistance to families so they can pay for out-of-pocket costs associated with their child’s treatment
- support survivors with customized school and work counselling when their disease or its treatment has left them with learning challenges
- fund promising research that examines the impact of childhood cancer and its treatment
Hugh's journey began with a brain tumor diagnosis at age four. With the support of POGO’s School and Work Transitions Program, Hugh has learned to navigate the challenges that remain long after treatment. Today, he shares his story to inspire others and highlight the importance of ongoing care for survivors. His bravery and story remind us all of the impact we can make when we come together.
Hugh, a childhood cancer survivor, spoke at the Toronto Women's Run in August 2025
