Years ago, I had a semicolon tattooed behind my ear—easy to forget, but always on the back of my mind. Sometimes I catch a glimpse in the mirror and remember what it stands for—but I don’t stop there. I keep going. I got help, and I want others to have that same chance.

The Semicolon Project does the same for others, including veterans—which matters to me because my partner, friends, family, and a large part of my community are active duty or veterans. I’ve been the one needing help, and I’ve lost people who didn’t get it in time. Those moments never leave you, and they’re part of the reason I’m stepping into this race.

I’ve run for my life. I’ve run from it. Now I run for others—and for the life I’m building. I run into the joy I’ve found in a healthy partner, a peaceful home, and a judgment-free place to understand my emotions and my daughter’s. I run headfirst into the storm of the future like a buffalo, knowing I can’t stop the rain, but I can choose how long I let it hold me down. I can let it break me, or I can keep running toward the sunshine—and I want every person who needs help to get there too.
