[ My Story ] 

Ten years ago, at the age of 18, I experienced firsthand the reality of staying in an all-women’s shelter, a co-ed shelter, and transitional housing. At that point in my life, I felt vulnerable, uncertain, and unsure of how to move forward. What I found instead was safety, compassion, and hope from the staff, counsellors, social workers, and community who welcomed me without judgment. Their support gave me the strength to begin rebuilding, one step at a time, until I eventually achieved full independence after spending 2.5 to 3 years in their care.

Now, a decade later, I am grateful to be in a very different place—established in my career, with stability, and with a roof over my head that I once only dreamed about. I will never forget the foundation that was given to me during those difficult days. A women’s shelter not only kept me safe in a nurturing environment, but also reminded me that brighter days were possible and that goals can be achieved, even when setbacks are part of the journey.

Giving back to shelters like Ernestine’s is deeply personal to me. It is my way of paying forward the support, kindness, and compassion that made such a difference in my own life. By supporting this shelter, we are giving women in crisis the chance to find safety, regain their dignity, and rebuild their lives with hope. 

Together, we can ensure that every woman who walks through those doors feels the same care, compassion, and possibility that once helped me rise up from the ground!
