My Story…
In April 2023, after two ER visits, a couple doctor's appointments, and one hospital admittance, Winston was diagnosed with Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis. He had inflammation in several joints including his knees, ankles and wrists. He was in significant pain - pain management and getting his inflammation under control were the top priorities. For the next year, under the guidance of his Rheumatologist at CHEO, Winston trialed multiple classes of medications including NSAIDs, steroids, antimetabolites and finally, biologics. In the early days, he was pricked and prodded on a routine basis as we fought to get the disease under control. Slowly, Winston found some relief as his inflammation decreased and his mobility increased. His stiffness started to dissipate and eventually, it had seemingly disappeared altogether. One year after diagnosis, we were told we had found a medication that was doing its job and our superhero was in medicated remission! This is something we do not take for granted and we are grateful for every single day that he is pain free. He does have a weekly and biweekly injection but he handles these like the real-life superhero he is, and is starting to understand that they "make his legs better." In learning more about this disease, we are so grateful for the "quick" diagnosis he received from his pediatrician and for the relative success we have had thus far. However, there is still lots of work that needs to be done for this disease and we will do our part to bring awareness to it. This walk is part of that journey!
