My Story…
Breakthrough T1D is an organization which holds a deeply personal significance to me. When she was in grade school, my cousin Megan was diagnosed with T1D. I remember the challenges it posed to her and her family as they learned to manage her new health condition. Megan and I spent a lot of time together, dancing, doing musical theater and we shared a tight friend group. I vividly remember when she started using an insulin pump, a major innovation in her care. During high school, her brother JP was also diagnosed with T1D. He and I were born 4 months apart and also shared a close friend group. I watched the impact it had on him, but JP benefitted tremendously from the amazing advancements in treatment that had been developed through important research funded by millions of people across the country. Because this disease has had such a profound impact on me and my family, for years we participated in the Juvenile Diabetes Walk in Boston. It was one of the most fun highlights of the year to have so many friends and family working together to raise money to fund new therapies and hopefully a cure. In July of 2023, JP tragically lost his life to complications of the disease. JP was not just my cousin, he was one of my absolute best friends. We shared nights sitting on the beach at the Cape with friends, Christmas night parties with our big Irish family, an amazing trip to Italy and Switzerland, and a crazy shared college graduation party. We all were devastated to lose JP. His passing at a young age reminds us all that, even with the progress that has been made to combat T1D, much work still needs to be done to find a cure!
I am running in the Falmouth Road Race in honor of Megan and JP and all of the families like mine who have had their lives impacted forever after a loved one is diagnosed with T1D.
Description
Welcome to my personal Breakthrough T1D fundraising page!
I have joined Breakthrough T1D to raise funds for the millions of people living with and affected by type 1 diabetes (T1D). The money I raise will help Breakthrough T1D fund critical research to progressively remove the impact of T1D from people's lives until no one has to fear developing the disease.
Type 1 diabetes is a life-threatening autoimmune disease in which a person's pancreas stops producing insulin—a hormone essential to the ability to get energy from food. It strikes both children and adults suddenly and changes life as they know it forever. It cannot be prevented and there is no cure.
Breakthrough T1D is the largest nongovernmental funder of T1D research and the only global organization with a strategic research plan to fight T1D. This science is complex and costly, and every dollar Breakthrough T1D is able to direct toward research comes from donors like you.
The challenge I have set for myself — to raise money for Breakthrough T1D and to race — is modest compared to the daily challenges of life with T1D, which involves a 24/7, unrelenting cycle of blood sugar testing and insulin injections to manage the disease.
Please support me and donate to my fundraising campaign. Your gift will make a difference for millions of people affected by this devastating, life-threatening disease. Won't you please give to Breakthrough T1D as generously as possible today?
Thank you for your support!
