My Story…
I am so excited to have joined this team to run the Falmouth Road Race with! To me, childhood hearing loss is so incredibly near and dear to my heart and here is why!
Before I start, a quick shout out to my 10 year old little lady! While this cause is directly related to her brother, she's not to be forgotten in my reason to run! Her support is something fierce and I wouldn't get through some of my days without hearing her tell me how much she loves me! My sweet Amelia Grace!
Some may know this story, some may not.
My son, Paxton, now 13 years old (woah!!), was born with hearing loss. Something I never even thought of happening. After failed hearing tests of his right ear in the hospital and several tests and Dr. appointments just days after leaving the hospital, it was confirmed, right sided, moderately to severe mixed hearing loss. As if the overwhelming feeling of being a brand-new mom wasn't enough, I now had to venture into the world of hearing loss. I was ready!
After an MRI of the brain (for other reasons), it was determined that Pax also had a right inner ear abnormality. It wasn't confirmed that this was the cause of his hearing loss but could be part of it.
After having Dr. appointments every three months, then every six months, amongst everyday life things, we have finally, at the age of 13 reached the point of having our checkups once a year with his (amazing) Otolaryngologist due to the steadiness of his hearing and not much change (good or bad) YAY!!!
To brag on my boy for a moment, Paxton's journey from infant to his early teen years has been amazing. To watch him flourish the way he has, has been so incredibly awesome to see. Along with the hearing loss came developmental delays in many ways. But this kid didn't let that stop him in all areas. In preschool, he held his own and began using his words more. That very first "I love you" at the age of 4 is something that I still remember as if it was yesterday! (and still tear up about) From there, he learned to read in kindergarten and hasn't stopped since! Singing? He LOVES to sing!! He's made an impression on many and is always greeted with huge smiles and high fives wherever he goes (quite literally)! He has made his way to the stage with his drama club, he also put himself out there performing SOLO at his school talent shows and singing in front of hundreds of people. He's in the school chorus, playing in the band, playing unified sports, and has a spot as the student manager of the varsity basketball team. He's a boy scout and loves to learn about God, who I believe has guided him through this incredible journey to this point.
I'm sure I have forgotten something awesome that he has done, but woah! He's awesome!
I'm one proud mama of both of my kiddos!
Please help me to raise funds to support others who are or will be in my shoes one day. To have a support system and resources when going through something like this makes all the difference in the world.
