My Story…

A little over two years ago now, our daughter Jordyn came into the world with Supraventricular Tachycardia (SVT), which is a form of heart arrhythmia. As a result, this required an extra week stay in the NICU at UMass Memorial Hospital. A few months later, Jordyn was diagnosed with an unlucky Staph Infection in her ankle, which required another week stay at Boston Children's Hospital. Fortunately, Jordyn has since gotten past both obstacles and is now healthy, happy, and full of energy.

The reason for sharing this is because both instances required extended stays, and in neither scenario did we have guaranteed places to stay that would keep us close to our daughter while she received treatment. By chance, we were able to stay in the last vacant boarding room in the NICU at UMass, which kept us just down the hall from Jordyn at the time. At Boston Children's we slept on the room's mini sofa and chair while we figured out treatments and determined how long our stay would be.

Unfortunately, not all families are as lucky and are forced to figure out an alternative solution for much longer periods of time. This is why Live4Evan is a crucial organization for families with children receiving treatment at Boston Children's for congenital heart disease, as they provide alternative housing solutions for these families. Live4Evan operates 7 apartments right next to the hospital, and they are striving to open more. The group has housed over 140 families with an average stay of 2-months since 2016, and of 250 applicants in that time-span, they have had to turn away 84% due to a lack of available apartments.

Though we did not experience an extreme scenario like most of these families do, my wife and I understand what it means to want to be as close as possible to our child (and well-rested when the opportunity presented itself) for when she needed us most. That's why this cause is so important to us. We want to help other families remain close to their children as they receive treatment at Boston Children's Hospital. With these apartments, families can remain on site with their kids and have a place to temporarily call home where they can get some rest, all without the financial burden.

Please consider helping us raise money in a joint effort to open up more apartments to help these families, removing one less thing for them to worry about.

Description

ABOUT US: The Live4Evan Organization was formed out of a desire to recognize and support the critical relationship between a child and their loved ones. We believe that there is no greater gift to be given than a parent’s love to a child. We understand the importance of staying by a child’s side without having to worry about the additional burdens that life can place on us. And so, our organization works tirelessly to provide financial and emotional support to families by providing them with temporary housing while their child receives congenital cardiac treatment.

The Falmouth Road Race has been a crucial fundraiser for Live4Evan for the past 7 years. Over this time, the Live4Evan team members have collectively raised over $620,000. Thanks in large part to these efforts, Live4Evan is currently providing SEVEN patient-family apartments for families traveling to Boston for pediatric cardiac care. These apartments are next to Boston Children's Hospital and offer calm and comfort in the midst of such a difficult time.  The close proximity to the hospital ensures that caretakers can be at their loved ones bedside in a moment's notice. The need for patient-family housing is critical and Live4Evan is committed to increasing our apartment portfolio in order to help additional families.

OUR STORY: Live4Evan was founded in memory of Evan Girardi, who passed away his senior year of college from a heart arrhythmia. Evan was born with a congenital heart defect (CHD) known as Corrected L-Transposition of the Great Arteries. Despite his heart condition, Evan lived his life to the fullest. Rather than allow Evan’s passing to put an end to the life and legacy that Evan had built, his friends and family formed Live4Evan to serve as a testament to the power of relationships and the importance of having loved ones by your side.
